SMMD / ARDA · Distributed systems laboratory

A robotic ecosystem learns to survive and expand on Mars.

This is not a real terraforming forecast. It is a coordination experiment: autonomous and conditional agents form a mycelium-like network, repair failures, inherit experience, and build new nodes.

01 · What it is

Distributed organism

Each node is an agent with an identity, role, energy, integrity, local memory, and decision mode. There is no single brain.

02 · Goal

Resilience and expansion

Evaluate whether the colony preserves critical functions, repairs itself, and increases infrastructure and habitability under stress.

03 · What flows

Mycelial signals

Lines carry expansion or correction calls. Agents contribute material and energy; pulses create or regenerate nodes.

From a signal to a new node

  1. PerceptionEach agent observes resources, neighbors, energy, failures, and environmental stress.
  2. DecisionConditional agents follow rules; autonomous agents choose a local action using utility and inherited memory.
  3. CoordinationA signal travels through nearby links and calls agents capable of contributing resources.
  4. MorphogenesisThe project creates a specialized descendant or replaces a lost node.
  5. LearningAt the end, traits, repairs, and expansion are weighted to guide the next lineage.
